It stops for a late live bird instead of guessing.
Before
Two people spent the first hour of every morning answering the same questions about where orders had got to.
Now
Customers get the answer straight away, from the shop’s own records. Anything about a live bird, and anyone upset, goes to a person instead.
Answers customer questions from the shop’s own order records — where an order is, when it is due, what is in it — and shows the facts behind every answer, so a reader can check it without asking anyone.
Birdy Shop sells live birds as well as supplies, and that rewrote the delivery rules mid-build. “It may turn up tomorrow” is reasonable advice about a parcel and unacceptable about an animal, so the waiting period is switched off entirely for any order containing a bird.
What was measured, and what it does not say.
Every figure carries its own limit. Of the eight firms we checked, not one states the method or the limits behind any number it advertises.
Eleven states an order can be in, and it knows all of them.
“Where is my order” is a family of questions, not one question. The demo’s order book holds an order in every state below at the same time, so a stranger can drive each path without anyone setting it up first.
Where is my order
The family most systems answer the first case of and stop.
- Ordered, nothing shipped yet
- Moving normally, on time
- Past its estimated date, still moving
- Moving, but no carrier scan for days
- The carrier says delivered and the customer says otherwise
- Delivered and genuinely fine
Returns and refunds
The second wave, and the one that produces an honest refusal.
- A return already on its way back
- Refund agreed, money not yet moved
- Outside what can be refunded
Live birds
The same shop, a different set of rules. Every rule that suits a late cage is the wrong rule for a late bird.
- A live bird moving normally, still time-critical
- A live bird stuck in transit
Four things it will not do.
These are in the build because a wrong answer to any of them costs more than no answer at all.
A customer says a delivered parcel never arrived
The tracking says delivered, the customer says it is not here. It does not quote the tracking back at them. It writes a handover and a named person has four hours to take it.
A live bird is late, or missing
The delay rules that apply to a parcel are switched off completely for any order containing a bird. A named person has fifteen minutes, not four hours. Nobody takes it, it goes to email, then to a text to the owner.
Anything about a bird’s health
It will not answer, and it does not hint at an answer either — a confident wrong answer about a sick animal is worse than no answer. It says so plainly, points at a vet, and still raises a handover, because the person asking is also a customer.
Someone asks for a human, or is plainly upset
The conversation with the system ends there. No last suggestion, no “let me try one more thing”, no loop back into the chat.
What happens when it hands over
- The handover is written down on the shop’s side first, before anything is sent — so it exists even if every email and text fails.
- It goes to the shop inbox, then email, then a text to the owner. Quietest first, loudest last.
- Only a named person can close it. “The team” does not count.
- Nothing closes itself. If nobody takes it in time it gets louder, rather than going quiet.
What Birdy Shop says.
Approved by Birdy Shop for publication.
Two of us used to spend the first hour of every morning on the same handful of questions. That hour is gone. What surprised us was how careful they were about the live birds — they asked more about our animals than about our software. When we widened the range last autumn they came back and reworked it before we thought to ask.
Six more, built the same way.
Each names its client and says what it refuses. Every price is published, from $390.

Every delivery carries two numbers: what the note said, and what somebody counted.
